What is the Ca:P ratio?

Calcium and phosphorus compete for absorption in the gut. When phosphorus dominates (a ratio below 1:1), the body leaches calcium from bone to keep blood levels stable. In sugar gliders this causes metabolic bone disease (MBD) — a painful, often fatal condition that shows up as hind-leg paralysis, brittle bones, and muscle wasting. A fruit-heavy diet is the most common cause, because most fruits carry far more phosphorus than calcium.

A worked example

Say you feed a classic fruit plate: 50 g apple plus 50 g grapes. That lands at roughly 0.5:1— deep in the danger zone. Now add just 20 g of collard greens and the same plate climbs to about 2.7:1, right inside the ideal band. One calcium-rich green is often all it takes to rescue a risky plate.

Best foods to raise a low ratio

  • Bok choy (≈2.8:1) — high calcium, low oxalate. The best green to feed daily.
  • Collard greens (≈9:1) — a powerful rebalancer, but rotate it (see the oxalate note below).
  • Papaya (≈2:1) — a rare calcium-rich fruit, useful as a sweet calcium source.
  • Phosphorus-free calcium powder — raises the ratio fast, but only works with enough vitamin D3 (below).

Vitamin D3 — the missing piece

A good Ca:P ratio is not enough on its own. Without vitamin D3, the gut can't absorb calcium regardless of the ratio. Make sure your glider's diet includes a D3 source or supervised UVB light exposure. This calculator does not account for vitamin D3 — track it separately.

The oxalate caveat for leafy greens

High-oxalate foods — spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard, and even kale — bind calcium in the gut, making it unavailable even when the Ca:P ratio looks ideal. Rotate your greens and lean on lower-oxalate options like bok choy for daily feeding, saving high-calcium-but-high-oxalate greens like collard and kale for rotation rather than every plate.
